In this highly competitive week, Christian and I placed in the bottom two and were, subsequently, chosen by the Brickmasters to be eliminated. I’m glad we used it when we did since it kept us building for the next episode where we built something we couldn’t have been prouder of. Brick Masters Amy and Jaime both were very astute to make sure that we always introduced a large amount of color into everything we did. That said, we all developed new strengths from being on the show. (Ray Mickshaw / Fox) By Tracy Brown Digital Editor I love it so much. In the winter of 2020, my friend Christian Cowgill and I appeared in the first American season of LEGO Masters, a reality-style building competition show. He is such a positive person. LEGO MASTERS USA is about to begin. It kind of is my little man-cave in its own way. Essentially, using the golden brick was demonstrating that awareness to the Brick Masters, to ourselves, and to our fellow contestants. That really stuck with me. Season Premiere Tuesday, June 1 | 8/7c. And at the end of the day, he said to me, “If you’re having doubts, if you’re feeling like this is not the best build we can do, then we should use it.” I appreciated his support on that. Christian: We definitely hit our creative blocks, but thanks to the other minds on the team, we were able to recharge and come out with fresh, new and different ideas. That build, I believe, really displayed that. That was exactly who they are as builders, where their forte is, the kind of stories that they tell. Posted on April 2, 2020 by truenorthbricks. I’d also say that it can be a little bit intimidating or stressful to have cameras and microphones on you at all times. Christian: I call you an alpha, big dog! However his emotion also points to the fact he makes decisions based ON emotion and time and again I think he has made the wrong call. Not only were you having the time of your life, but you had to keep yourself grounded and stay focused and be careful not to break your creation. For instance, during the most recent challenges, we were there for a full hour after everyone else went home. It was made of plastic like a regular LEGO brick, but I suspect that someone in the prop department painted it gold to work with the cameras on-set. I am already deep into building the upcoming Marvel Superheroes Daily Bugle set. Christian: I would say it comes from a love for LEGO, but also a love for your fellow man. Those were the times when we weren’t on the build floor, but we were all confined to this little trailer with a bunch of snacks and each other’s company. Aaron: Brick Master Amy is always saying to use more color. Grab one brick, realize you got the wrong brick, go back again. Of course, we never wanted to use the golden brick, but it just felt like the right time. I feel like it is true to who I am. Storytelling is a huge part of the presentation of any art. So when twists would pop up, everyone would be like, “Oh, here we go.” But definitely, as you said, it’d make or break a challenge. I think the show presented that moment very much in that light, where it’s these people who care so much about LEGO and so much about what they’re working on. Aaron: We had actually met several of the cast who made it onto the final show. This week's features character is the Centaur Warrior from Series 21. I always go to BrickFair Virginia in August. In Episode 8 of LEGO Masters, “Good vs. Evil” (3/26/2020), each team picked two minifigures from LEGO’s Collectible Minifigure Series 19, and turn them into either a team of superheroes or a squad of supervillains! I have to think about that. For me, no model that Christian and I did married form and function better like that underwater scene. Aaron and Christian are technically excellent builders, but at the heart of LEGO is creativity and this show has tried to put an emphasis on that week after week. Truly a goofy time after all the cameras closed down and everybody was a little “build crazy,” as it were. In the winter of 2020, my friend Christian Cowgill and I appeared in the first American season of LEGO Masters, a reality-style building competition show. Jamie and Amy are amazing creators and really know what they’re talking about. LEGO®, the LEGO logo and the brick and knob configuration are trademarks of The LEGO Group. Our decision to build an enclosed structure literally boxed us in, and guided us towards manifesting a more realistic interpretation of the “Land of Koo Koo Magic” than other teams. Aaron: That build, aside from being polished, technically accurate, and creative, is one of the purest encapsulations of a team’s character in a build that I had ever seen. Each episode features teams of two building Lego projects from a vast array of bricks and parts to meet both creative and practical goals set by the challenge for a particular episode. Everyone was pushed, everyone had to expand their skill set and do things they’ve never done before. [laughs] Me and Aaron truly have a love for getting it done. Aaron Newman, Self: Lego Masters. We’re both in this competition together. Aaron: The golden brick was neither of those things. It was not exactly like the chrome-coloured bricks you can get on the keychains, nor was it made out of metal. This build—which was divided into a 14 hour first part and a 4-hour second part—was a huge emotional roller coaster for me. Obviously, every LEGO nut would love to have more storage, more space, more organization. When we had our Movie Genres challenge, we built ourselves into a corner. Read on for my special dissection of this model’s process, design choices, and more. We’re not guys that will hinder progress. It must have been that. The stakes were high even without the Golden Brick being up for grabs once more! Literally blood, sweat, and tears. I noticed him getting frustrated and I thought, “We need to reallocate the labor. The Mega City challenge really let Christian and I play to our strengths. I think we adjusted pretty quickly. It really was a lesson on how best to use one’s time as we really did not have a lot of it. The show reflected that. Obviously, looking back on challenges where we faced more critique, or for example the challenge that sent us home, there are things I would have done differently. Another build that was one of my favorites was the Cut in Half challenge, in episode three. It didn’t really show on TV, but using the golden brick carries a weight with it. “Attack on Sustainable City” landed us in the top two teams for this week. We scrambled a lot in those two minutes. When we came back in, when Christian got me to return to the world, he had my back and supported me through that moment. There were times in my life where I was a little bit more private with my hobby as a result of the social pressures of middle and high school for instance. I think the teams who were able to take a twist and consistently use it to make their builds better were the teams that ended up where they are now. It was not exactly like the chrome-colored bricks you can get on the key chains, nor was it made out of metal. Age: ... (15 minutes worth of material padded out to an hour long show). This catastrophic collapse felt like the lowest of lows… until we got an extremely lucky twist! In part two of the challenge, during which we were instructed to put our city blocks “under attack,” Christian and I managed to both rebuild our fallen tower and create an iconic monster of which we were quite proud. I was like, holy cow I didn’t know how to do it that way, or this way, or I have a new idea for this. Then they’re like, “It’s actually just the delivery system.” I’m like, “WHAT?!?”. And then I eventually started going to conventions like BrickFair Virginia and created networks of friends. It’s like a 20-person bromance. I wish we could have been there for it. I love to put motion in our builds and design functions! She said that our usage of it demonstrated our awareness of our work, and that we both knew we hadn’t put our best foot forward addressing the challenge directly. Christian: That’s a GREAT question. Watch LEGO Masters clips at FOX.com now! Aaron Newman January 27, 2021. And of course, you know that was never more dramatic than in episode five when I leaned on Christian with my mental health because I couldn’t hold myself up at that point. But yeah, there were sometimes when it got pretty hot and I had to take off the jacket. That was definitely one of my favorites. I was very interested to see what we were going up against. So, that challenge looks like it is going to be really cool. It involved one of my favorite mediums, LEGO, so naturally we came ready to bring our A-game. He had basically no experience to this point with working with Power Functions or motors or gears or anything like that in his models. It’s kind of exhausting after a while to be working 12 hours a day, five days a week, and building and creating that much! I do like to dress up a bit. Read on for my special dissection of this model’s process, design choices, and more! Apart, we will do nothing but fail, but together we will continue to move forward. We thought it made sense to have one of us do one, and the other work on the second. This was our first time transporting builds that were so tall across the build room. Christian: I would definitely agree with Aaron. Christian: Before the show, we knew of each other’s work through the great social media web of LEGO. I held myself together long enough to scrape something up from the floor and slap a roof on the building so we could present something that was finished to the Brick Masters. And to grow my LEGO collection. [laughs] That’s inevitably going to happen. Obviously, in the Mega City challenge, that twist gave us an enormous opportunity that let us get into the top two for that week. Like Christian, my fandom has really grown and strengthened by attending conventions and joining the online community, getting see what other people were doing with LEGO bricks. Meanwhile I continued to focus on some of the more technical aspects. It truly was creativity at its finest. Aaron: Brick Master Amy said something to us in terms of using the golden brick during our critique on that episode. As we wheeled our build into the gallery during the final two minutes of part one, our table hit a brick on the floor, sending a shock wave up the tall tower and toppling five of its fourteen stories. A new competition series is brewing over at Fox and it involves a lot of bricks. When the twist came, our build really was not cohesive to the Brick Masters. LEGO Masters returns April 8 on FOX where three teams venture into a galaxy far, far away for a Star Wars challenge! But LEGO Masters is a partner show. I’ve looked up to Tyler’s work for 10 years, getting to build with him was such a delight. It’s easier to reconcile two points of view than four. We could have made better choices that would have led us better. Aaron and Christian produced a top-notch, clean build. So my advice would be to never stop. The characters we picked would serve as the inspiration behind a secret hideout build. Pretty much everything else gets scrapped for parts. That was just the game we played. He does commissioned work so you should check him out if you want a fabulous stuff using Lego bricks. Midway through the challenge, I saw that Christian needed help. We made it! One was Richard and Flynn’s clock for the Cut-in-Half challenge. Christian and I obviously debated about whether or not to use it in that moment. Unlike his Lego Masters partner who is soldiering and doing Lego designing on the side, Aaron designs custom-built Legos for a living. It’s something I’m accustomed to. Yes, we all got a little kooky. And after leaving LEGO Masters, if anything, my build-bug, as I call it, was supercharged. The other big takeaway for me is that a build story should tell itself from the first glance at it, which is something I have always strived for. For Episode 2 of the series, “Space Smash” (2/12/2020), Christian and I built Catastrophe at the Crescent, an unorthodox space station designed to be blown up by real-life explosives. It was made of plastic like a regular LEGO brick, but I suspect that someone in the prop department painted it … It was a new obstacle to rise to. Christian: I would say when I walked in, I walked in with not a clue in the world. You lose it if you don’t use it and end up in the bottom two. My mom had gotten me this Jack Stone Fire Rescue set that I vividly remember. It was just amazing luck that with the twist we got to repair it. You’re using it to do something constructive–literally. Our learning curve was steep in the first challenge, but we overcame that and succeeded. However, with the competition so fierce, the team’s hidden build details certainly set them back. Christian, you go first. However, with the competition so fierce, the team’s hidden build details certainly set them back. So, we got to not just build alongside many of the people who had become our peers, but also got to hang out with them a bit. In this LEGO Masters video, LEGO MASTER Aaron demonstrates how various Lego sockets and joints can create other-worldly creatures as part of the At Home With series.. For Episode 1 of the series, “Dream Park Theme Park” (2/5/2020), Christian and I assembled Spaceland, a retro-space themed amusement park complete with a spinning UFO swings ride, a crashed-alien-spaceship-turned-café, a modern visitor center, a laser-gun shooting gallery, intergalactic storefronts, and an enormous, motorized Ferris wheel… all built in just 15 hours. Finally got some LEGO x Adidas ZX 8000 sneakers. We also have a LEGO Masters reunion planned for Brickworld Chicago too. And whilst LEGO Masters Aus did have these aspects, it also had a real heart to it. That was the luckiest turn of our whole experience. Read on for my special dissection of this 12-hour model’s process, design choices, and more! Aaron: I am bummed because the very next challenge that is coming up is a Star Wars building challenge that had our names all over it! ?” and I reply 23, and she goes, “Well, oooooeeee, I’m not gonna be your person to take out here,” and we both laughed. As I woke up the whole thing came crashing down, it was hilarious. As you know, Christian and I left earlier than we wanted to so, there wasn’t as clear of an ending for it for me. LEGO Masters was this gorgeous competition, not only in the sense that everybody wanted everybody to be the best, but it also reinvigorated your mind. That turned out to be kind of insurmountable for us and we had to use the golden brick. It showed that they could bring a fun element of humor and kookiness. For me, the hardest part of adjusting to being on LEGO Masters had nothing to do with taking on that huge amount of building and more to do with the idea of building with somebody else as a team and leaning on them. "Here's the Story... of a Lovely Lady...". We were working where our strengths were. Oscars Best Picture Winners Best Picture Winners Golden Globes Emmys STARmeter Awards San Diego Comic-Con New York Comic-Con Sundance Film Festival Toronto Int'l Film Festival Awards Central Festival Central All Events I have gone with it and eventually discovered Flickr, which is a very popular social media site for LEGO people. In the aftermath of their elimination, True North Bricks, The Brothers Brick , Brickset, … That’s what I think of as being a really special time for getting to the heart of what LEGO Masters was, which is a lot of people who love LEGO building LEGO together. LEGO enthusiasts participate in a series of competitions that begin with a single LEGO brick and … Obviously, it was heightened on the show–I’m not wearing suit jackets and pants every day, but that’s the kind of thing I would do for this kind of circumstance. Read on for my special dissection of our models’ process, design choices, and more! That’s how I got to where I was. It was beautiful, it really was. But of course, this is a family friendly show so not everything he said made it to TV. Aaron: Christian and I both tend to build in more “realistic-style” with our personal building. As such, to fit the parameters of the challenge, our build for this week actually comprised of four distinct models: a superhero headquarters disguised inside a Tech Center building; two individual vehicles (one for each of our heroes), and a joint battle scene between our pair of superheroes and fellow team Tyler and Amy’s pair of supervillains. For our model, Christian and I chose to build the interior of the Taker-Waker’s house, which the storybook specified as being messy and full of stolen toys. There is complexity that arises though, because building with a partner is an experience and I think it took some acclimating for a lot of the teams, Christian and myself included. The planning phase was something that brought with it a lot of thought process. Tyler and Amy have an amazing way of characterizing LEGO in such a lifelike manner that is unique solely to them. Christian: Building for that extended period of time, mentally you’re exhausted. The Mega City build was my favorite build of the season because it had the most of myself in it. Despite presenting polished models that were up to our usual standards—a nice change after our Storybook build, which had turned out a bit messy—Christian and my competition also brought forth some amazing work this challenge. But now I have a higher awareness around that. I have yet to build those, but I’m really looking forward to it. So, I’m always thinking more about ways to bring color into my builds somehow. This setting choice, however, turned out to be a bad one. Check out my full pre-release review of the set at TrueNorthBricks.com. LEGO Masters is set to debut Wednesday, February 5 on the network at 9/8c, and LEGO … Aaron: … We are the go-getters, guys that’ll get it done. That’s really how much I love it. So was the community, and all the people and connections, and the role models that I made and found in the LEGO sphere of my life. We came back out and the Brick Masters were so generous and so understanding. Aaron: I was surprised and pleased that the show treated that experience honestly and respectfully in the way that they did. In early 2020, I appeared as a contestant on the United States’ first season of LEGO Masters, a reality-format building competition show. They said, “You guys managed to present a finished build in spite of what happened and you should be really proud of yourself for that.”. Really, it takes time to get to the level of the contestants on LEGO Masters. I’ve got a couple of industrial shelves full of different sorted boxes. So, I was happy to be displayed that way, and I’m happy with the way the show branded Christian and I in terms of our wardrobe. Not necessarily trying to take control, but getting creative, and giving helpful advice that moves the project forward in an effort to complete. I recommend everyone get it. In winter of 2020, I appeared with Christian Cowgill on the first American season of LEGO Masters, a reality-style building competition show.It was a tremendous creative experience for us both, and we produced some pretty spectacular builds during our run! In the blockbuster moment we captured, the Dragon Prince—chained by wicked magic—has managed to delay the horde of skeletons with fire, but cannot prevent one of the necromancers from pushing his love from the top of the tower. Through the beauty of LEGO Masters we were finally able to achieve that. It was a gamble at first. We love, support, admire, and cherish every person who we shared the experience with. Lego Masters (stylized as LEGO Masters) is an American reality competition television series based on the British series of the same name. In Episode 7 of LEGO Masters, “Storybook” (3/18/2020), all the teams were presented with an identical, Mad Lib-style story, the blanks of which had been filled in creatively by a group of kids.
